SCHOOLS PRIVATE, PUBLIC, CONCERTADAS

Overview of School Types

1. Public Schools

Funded and operated by the government; tuition-free or low-cost (often proportional to family income in early years).

Language of instruction is primarily Catalan, which can lead to fast-paced immersion for children unfamiliar with it.

They follow a regional curriculum and are accessible through a public lottery system.

2. Concertadas (Semi-Private Schools)

Privately managed but partially state-funded, often associated with religious or civic organizations. They typically charge additional monthly fees (e.g., ~€200/month), although “optional,” they’re often effectively required.

Some families and educators consider them to offer a balanced option between public and private education.

3. Private (International) Schools

They offer international curricula like IB, British, American, or French, in English or other languages.

These are the most expensive options—fees can reach up to €1,000/month or more.
